Officials from MEPS will be at JMHS on Thursday, October 13th to administer the ASVAB to all Maverick juniors. The ASVAB is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. It can also be used as a great career exploration tool for students!
Juniors are invited to attend a workshop titled "All About Scholarships" presented by the counseling office on Tuesday, October 11th during Intramurals. We are excited to talk about scholarships and the many opportunities available to our students. Join us!
On Monday, October 10th National Honor Society students and National Technical Honor Society students traveled to Charlottesville, VA. While there, students visited Monticello and the birthplace of James Monroe. Thus far this year, these students have volunteered at the Springfield Nursing Home, helped organize a domestic violence awareness event, scheduled a luncheon for our local police officers and planned a day of recognition for Mrs. Mustain during National Principal's Week. The students are working very hard, and we are excited to see what they do next!
Representatives from the Monroe County Clerk's Office will be at JMHS on Thursday, October 6th during both lunch shifts to register student voters. We are happy to have them visiting with our students and encouraging all students to register and vote.
West Virginia University will be hosting two MEET WVU events in southern West Virginia this fall. Students are invited to join representatives from WVU for an evening of fun where you can learn about how majors and minors translate into your career, financial aid, Adventure WV, how to fill out the FAFSA and applying to WVU. October 5, 2016 Clay Center 6:30pm Charleston, WV October 6, 2016 Tamarack Conference Center 6:30pm Beckley, WV CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air Force Association to inspire high school/middle school-aged students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future. At the core of the competition is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, a tournament-style competition in which youth compete to defend a computer network against attack during a series of web-based competition rounds. West Virginia schools are encouraged to join the CyberPatriots program. The Education Alliance in partnership with the Governor’s STEM Initiative are offering scholarships for West Virginia public schools to participate in the CyberPatriots program during the 2016-17 school year. Seniors and senior parents are invited to attend a FAFSA workshop at JMHS this fall. Judy Kee-Smith from the WVHEPC will be at JMHS to help you complete the FAFSA at these workshops. Please call the school counseling office to schedule an appointment.
October 5th - 12:00-5:30 November 9th - 12:00-5:30 Attention Freshmen and Sophomores: Do you need help studying for high school classes? There are specific skills you can develop to help with your academic success. All freshman and sophomore students are invited to attend a workshop on Study Skills during Intramurals on Tuesday, October 4th. The workshop will be held in the lecture room.
JMHS students, Alyssa Hoover, Courtney Ingle and Rebecca Hurley, have taken on the #stopbullyingproject at JMHS again this school year. These girls created a bulletin board for the hallway that uses quotes to highlight the need to stop bullying. This bulletin board will be displayed throughout the month of October, which is bullying prevention awareness month. They also designed and presented a lesson plan on bullying prevention for Mrs. Young's Advanced Communications class. We are so proud of these students and their efforts.
