Students the semester is winding down. Now is the time to buckle down and finish strong! Be certain to speak with teachers about any missing work and extra credit assignments. We invite parents, families, friends and community members to attend the concert. We are proud of our band. They have done a great job, thus far this year!

A Storybook Christmas is a event sponsored by the Family Resource Network and Head start. The purpose of this event is to teach children that literacy is not only educational but fun and entertaining. To prepare for this event, Early Childhood Education students made developmentally appropriate activities for the children to participate in. This event was a learning experience not only for the kids, but the students also. The Maryida Mosby Travel Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to an outstanding West Virginia tenth or eleventh grade student during the West Virginia Alpha Delta Kappa Sate Convention in April 2016. The scholarship is provided in memory of Maryida Mosby. The scholarship will be awarded for educational travel. The deadline to apply is December 4, 2015. See the guidance office for an application.
On Wednesday, December 9th, twenty-two students were inducted in to the MCTC Chapter of the National Technical Honor Society. Students selected for this prestigious club meet the following criteria:
Students must have taken at least three CTE courses and will graduate as a completer. Students must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.5, and a minimum CTE GPA of 3.75. Students cannot have any current discipline or attendance problems. We're very proud of our NTHS students, and we are excited to see what projects they will complete this year. Letters About Literature, a project of the West Virginia Center for the Book, is a reading and writing contest for students in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to that author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters About Literature awards prizes on both the state and national levels. A panel of West Virginia judges will select the top essayists in our state. State winners will receive a cash award and advance to the national level judging. A panel of national judges for the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress will select one national winner per competition level. The deadline for entry is December 4. Last year a Maverick JROTC cadet was invited to travel to Charleston, WV for a reception where he received some goodies for the quality of his entry. We would love to have another student qualifier this year! Monroe County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Monroe County Teen CERT have been awarded the Governor's Service Award. The Monroe County Commission presented the award on Wednesday, December 2nd in Union. JROTC cadets, Clayton White and Cade Fisher, represented the Monroe County Teen CERT at the ceremony. Great job Mavs!
On Wednesday, December 2nd JROTC instructor, Master Sergeant Wiley, worked with JMHS students on interpreting their ASVAB scores. Master Sergeant Wiley explained the meaning of the test scores, and how they can be applied to both civilian and military careers. As part of the presentation, students were introduced to several career exploration opportunities and resources. Students are encouraged to speak with Master Sergeant Wiley or the guidance office if they would like more information. Thanks Master Sergeant Wiley!!
