The West Virginia Sheriffs’ Youth Leadership Academy is an annual, 6-day residential summer program for teenage citizens from throughout the State. The Academy seeks to deter risk-taking behavior patterns by introducing the participants to recreation alternatives and educating them on the negative consequences of drugs, alcohol, and violence. The Academy provides our youth with the leadership skills necessary for them to go back to their home communities and help others deal with these challenges. The Academy also encourages participation in citizenship activities and teaches responsibility. The Academy does require a certain amount of physical activity during the week. However…The Academy is for mainstream youth and is NOT a juvenile “boot camp”.
The Academy offers a challenging, educational, and fun summer camp experience!! Academy Staff The Academy staff consists of Sheriffs, Deputies, community volunteers, and other staff. The staff includes both women and men. Emergency medical personnel are also at the Academy throughout the week. Each first time participant, or cadet, becomes part of a “district” under the guidance and leadership of junior and senior counselors who have previously attended the Academy. Boys and girls stay in separate areas with other cadets, counselors & staff. Dates & Location The 2021 WV Sheriffs’ Youth Leadership Academy is scheduled for July 11-16, 2021 and will be held at West Liberty University (Ohio County) West Virginia. Participants arrive after lunch on Sunday, July 11th, and depart for home in the evening on Friday, July 16th. A graduation ceremony ends the Academy week on Friday. Eligibility & Fees All applicants must be enrolled in either a West Virginia public or private school. First time applicants, or cadets, must be completing the 8th grade and expected to be entering the 9th grade in the Fall of 2021. The Academy is open to both male and female students who qualify in accordance with the WV State Board of Education Extracurricular Activities Participation Rule. Cadets must have attained at least a 2.0 on their most recent grade card. The fee, which covers the entire week of activities, food, lodging and t-shirts is $75.00 for each camper. The West Virginia Department of Education is accepting applications for the West Virginia Governor’s School of Entrepreneurship (GSE) for students in grades 9-11. The program will be held virtually this summer.
The Governor’s School of Entrepreneurship is hosted by Marshall University, and students in grades 9, 10 and 11 are eligible to apply. Students participating in GSE will be working in virtual teams to develop, pitch and launch a new venture. All teams will pitch their venture to a panel of business leaders who can invest in their ideas. Working in conjunction with Marshall University and West Virginia University, it was determined last year that these events would be held virtually in order to make long-term plans for summer activities. Please encourage eligible students to apply by visiting govschools.wv.gov. Applications for GSE and GSI are being accepted through March 25. Introduction

Dear Member of the Junior Class:
Applications to the West Virginia Governor’s Honors Academy (GHA) are available at www.govschools.wv.gov, and we hope that you will visit the site today to read about the exciting opportunity for GHA 2021. GHA is about learning in a safe environment, and this year it means that the academy is going to be delivered on a virtual platform. Classes will be bold, exciting and interactive. The curriculum is designed as a unique supplement to the usual high school curriculum. It is neither an acceleration of high school nor an anticipation of college curricula. If selected, you will be led to explore cutting-edge theories in the arts and sciences and develop a greater understanding of how art, culture, and knowledge change with time. You’ll be challenged to develop the rigorous creative and intellectual skills that will be critical to leading a well-lived life and for making positive contributions to your communities and to society at large. We will invite up to 170 students, including 15 career/technical students to participate this year. Each county superintendent has the privilege of selecting two students to attend and nominating several more for the statewide pool from those who apply. Those nominated for the statewide pool will be considered for the extra slots. Thanks to your guidance counselor and technology, we can contact each of you individually, and we hope that many of you take advantage of the opportunity. Financed through funding by the legislature and Marshall University, the West Virginia Governor’s Honors Academy is sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education. *GHA candidates must have a minimum 3.5 GPA or be in the top 10% of the junior class. Sincerely, Sherry Keffer Coordinator West Virginia Department of Education [email protected] If you have a talent in writing, dancing, singing, acting, playing an instrument or painting and drawing and you would like to spend three weeks during the summer fine tuning that talent, consider the Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA). Take five minutes to view the video about GSA at https://www.facebook.com/wvgsa2019/videos/1280732465415604/ to see what it is all about.
The Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) is financed by the West Virginia Legislature, managed by the West Virginia Department of Education, and is FREE. All materials and supplies needed for your classes will be shipped to your home. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had to redesign our program to provide a deeply meaningful digital experience for you. Imagine that you are a painter and get to spend three hours each morning throwing yourself into your creation at your digital art studio (aka any quiet place in your home or local library) to work with 13 or 14 other students under the direction of an accomplished artist. If you are a dancer, your digital studio will provide you an opportunity to stretch and grow in both classical ballet and modern dance. The classes are small, the passion is intense, and the growth is simply phenomenal. The same growth opportunities exist for students in the other arts disciplines at GSA. Upon arrival in 2019, one student told her mother, “These are my people; this is where I belong.” Another said, near the end of the GSA, “Words don’t express how grateful I am for this experience. It is something that will follow me beyond here. It will follow us all from here.” Even though we will not meet on campus, we will have special activities and programs that will not only allow but create a sense of family among all the artists. To get information about applying for GSA go to http://govschools.wv.gov/gsa. From there you can follow the links to the applications as well as information about how to plan for your audition. If you have questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or by phone at 304-640-0988. For the first time ever, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) will host its annual Just Say KNOW educational summer camp virtually rather than on the school’s campus in Lewisburg.
The weeklong camp, whose theme for 2020 is “Neuroscience: Perception or Reality,” will take place June 15-19. The camp is open to ninth- through 12th-graders as well as recent high school graduates. There is no cost to participate. Neuroscience is the study of the structure and function of the brain and nervous system. Camp materials will be structured around the five senses and how they help humans interpret their surroundings. Participants will discover how signals from our senses of vision, touch, hearing, smell and taste are converted to a language the brain can understand. Crystal Boudreaux, Ph.D., an assistant professor in WVSOM’s biomedical sciences department and director of the Just Say KNOW program, said one of the advantages to hosting the camp online is the opportunity to reach more participants. Unlike in previous years, there will be no limit on the number of attendees for the 2020 camp. “Housing, travel and space are limited when we’ve hosted Just Say KNOW on campus,” Boudreaux said. “A disadvantage of a virtual event is not being able to have the campers immersed in the WVSOM community for a week, but we’re working on ideas to showcase the institution virtually.” Boudreaux said the camp will include interactive activities, virtual lectures and games that promote a greater understanding of the human sensory network. Participants will receive a list of household materials to gather at the start of each day, and will also learn about topics outside of neuroscience, such as health care careers, osteopathic principles and practice, and WVSOM’s Rural Health Initiative. The week will wrap up with a showcase that will be recorded so attendees can share their accomplishments with family and friends. Prospective attendees must email an essay detailing their interest in the virtual camp to Karen Wines, a WVSOM biomedical sciences instructor, at [email protected] by May 29. The letter of recommendation from a teacher required in previous years has been waived. Campers will need an Internet connection in order to participate. Instructions to access the activities will be provided to registrants after the May 29 application deadline. WVSOM’s previous camps in the series include Just Say KNOW to Drugs!, Just Say KNOW to Infectious Diseases! and Just Say KNOW to Anatomy! |
