Glenville State College is accepting nominations to the Honors Program for the Fall Semester 2014 term. Students must have an ACT compositve score or 24 or higher and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. Students in this program will be eligibile for $750 semester scholarships, as well as, field trips, research projects, and leadership opportunities. Letters About Literature, a project of the West Virginia Center for the Book, is a reading and writing contest for students in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to that author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters About Literature awards prizes on both the state and national levels. A panel of West Virginia judges will select the top essayists in our state. State winners will receive a cash award and advance to the national level judging. A panel of national judges for the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress will select one national winner per competition level. The deadline for entry is December 10. The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2014 competition. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. The Most Valuable Student scholarship deadline is December 6, 2013. Applications must be submitted to the Lewisburg Elks Lodge. Ranging from $1,000 per year to $12,500 per year, Most Valuable Student scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree. For more information visit the Elks National Foundation website.
