Inspired Leaders will join over 600 young people from around the state for this annual event at West Virginia's Capitol. At the event, Inspired Leaders will hear from community leaders, attend a legislative forum, and even get a chance to speak with their elected officials. Inspired Leaders are encouraged to speak with their school administrators beforehand with the hope of allowing entire schools to participate in this event, which will already be attended by numerous schools throughout the state.
Maverick Inspired Leaders attending the event on January 28th are Catherine Allen, Antonella Blanco, Matthew Meadows and Samuel Womack On Wednesday, January 20th, WV Senator Joe Manchin held a Skype session with JMHS seniors. Four seniors were selected to ask Senator Manchin questions about issues in WV. The questions covered topics ranging from the coal industry problems to cost of education and job opportunities. We are proud of the seniors who spoke with Senator Manchin, and we are thankful that he was willing to speak with our students about these important issues.
On Friday, January 15th, the LPN instructor for Summers County will be visiting Mrs. Bennett's nursing classroom to speak about the LPN program in Summers County. This is a one year program. It is a great stepping stone to the RN program and in many cases (depending on the school), it will take off a year of RN school. Any student interested in becoming a nurse should sign up with Mrs. Bennett by Wednesday to attend the presentation. We have had a number of JMHS graduates complete LPN school, some of which have gone on to RN school, as well.
JMHS sophomore, Ethan McKlarney, has be recognized as WVVA's student of the month. Ethan is a great example for our Maverick students! He takes advanced academic courses, actively participates in JMHS sports and clubs, volunteers for community activities and runs his own business with his brother. Click here to view the news story. An admissions counselor from WVU Tech will be here on Friday, January 8th to meet with students interested in attending the college. Please stop by and speak with the counselor if you have any questions. She can speak with you about admission requirements, scholarships and financial aid, college life and more!
On Thursday, January 7th, three JMHS graduates will be speaking with students enrolled in JROTC courses about college life. Nathan Wilson (WVU student), Joe Womack (VMI student) and Chloe Meadows (Warren Wilson College student) will be discussing strategies for succeeding in higher education. They will also talk with students about campus life, college classes and more. We are excited to host these former graduates, and we are thankful they are willing to work with our students. Students are asked to write an original and creative essay of 1,000 words or less that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage. Students should use at least five varied sources. Winners can receive up to $10,000. The deadline for submission is January 6th. For more information, click here.
A recruiter for the US Air Force will be here on Wednesday during both lunch shifts to speak with students interested in joining the Air Force. Please stop by the table, if you are interested in a career with the Air Force.
he National High School Oratorical Scholarship Program is a constitutional speech contest. Students will prepare an oration on the Constitution of the United States. Winners of the contest win anywhere from $100 to $18,000. If you are interested in participating, please see the guidance office for more information.
