2019 WV Dairy Princess, Abby Fraley, taught Mrs. Rene Wilson's health classes the benefits of enjoying dairy in one's diet on January 28th, 2020. She discussed how milk is produced, vitamins and minerals present in milk, and the number of dairy farms and cows in West Virginia. The highlight of the presentation was the demonstration of making vanilla ice cream using rock salt, ice and the ingredients of delicious cream, sugar, and vanilla. Students enjoyed sampling the ice cream with another product that contains milk....milk chocolate chips! The demonstration was followed by a question and answer sessions with the high school students.
JMHS students have been invited to apply to the first annual John Hopkins Global Health and Leadership Conference! The conference will be held on April 4th and 5th, 2020 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Students interested in the field of medicine, global health, or public health are encouraged to apply. The conference's ticket fee can be waived if it presents a significant financial burden to any accepted student. We would love to have student representation from James Madison High School.
The GHLC at JHU is a student and faculty-led project under the organization Glohea at JHU, an academic student organization within the Johns Hopkins Undergraduate Department of Public Health Studies. The conference aims to bring together some of the world’s most exceptional high school students, to increase youth involvement in global health, and to provide students interested in health careers with an opportunity to distinguish themselves from their peers. Johns Hopkins University is a world leading institution in global health, and has top medical, pre-medical, public health, and biomedical engineering programs, among many others. This opportunity will allow high school students to enter or develop themselves in the fields of global health and medicine while forging connections with passionate students like themselves from across the United States and abroad. Accepted students will learn from world leaders in global health including professors, physicians, researchers, leaders of nonprofits and humanitarian organizations, and policy developers. Students will also learn invaluable leadership skills as they further their education and extracurricular endeavors. Additionally, many accepted students will have the opportunity to present on any of their own global health work or on a global health topic of their choice. For students who are interested in the conference but may struggle with travel and/or lodging costs, the Johns Hopkins team is offering to write letters for students once they are accepted to the conference that they can utilize to potentially receive grant funding from local or community organizations. The application deadline is January 10th, 2020. For more information: https://glohea.org Direct application link: https://forms.gle/ggmxKMssQzMwHqsn8 |
