Students at JMHS will begin completing the Smarter Balanced Assessment on April 27th. Students should make sleep a priority the night before testing, and they should eat a healthy breakfast, which is provided free of charge, the morning of the test. SBA results are part of a student's permanent record, and WV colleges are using the scores for admission decision and course placement purposes. Our students have been doing very well on the practice tests, and we are excited to see the scores that they earn this spring. Good luck Mavs!

Camp STEM is instructed by professors who are experts in the fields of engineering, math, science and technology. The professors will guide students through various experiments, as well as provide detailed lectures and demonstrations. Current WVU Tech students in STEM majors will serve as guides throughout the camp. The camp will be June 18-23. Applications are open until April 17, 2017. You may apply at campstem.wvu.edu. For more information about Camp STEM, please contact Dr. Kimberlyn Gray at 304-442-3247.
Governors Entrepreneurship Camp applications are now available at www.govschools.wv.gov/gse. It starts on 7/5/17 and runs for three weeks. Students will develop, pitch and launch a new business venture! Only 60 students are chosen to attend, applications are due 4/15.
The JROTC program will be presenting a community program on Thursday, April 12th at 1:00. Community members are invited to attend. We would like to have as many veterans in attendance as possible to show our gratitude for their service. As part of this ceremony, the school will be recognizing Clay Havens & Antonella Blanco for earning appointments to military academies. We will also be recognizing several seniors who have made a commitment to serve our country by enlisting. We are very excited that Senator Manchin will be on site to honor these students. Please come out and support your local community veterans, and our future Maverick veterans.
FIRST2 is a new NSF-funded project to better support first generation college students who are potentially interested in STEM fields in their first 2 years of undergrad. The project offers current high school seniors a PAID 2-week internship at Greenbank Observatory in radio astronomy or at Fairmont in the Solar Army (working on using sunlight to split water into hydrogen fuel!). During the academic year, participants will have a weekly STEM support session with faculty at WVU, Fairmont, Marshall or Glenville (or virtually at other WV schools) to help navigate and thrive in college and STEM classes, as well as learn to be an ambassador for STEM and first generation college students.
Finally, this program will offer participants funding to return to their home high school and serve as Hometown Ambassador, serving as a resource to high school students as well as to the k12 and higher ed systems so that we can all grow in the direction of a better WV through increasing the success of our students. The application priority deadline is April 1. For more information, see the school counseling office. |
