Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Justin St. Clair, and Monroe County Deputy Mike Heller spoke to James Monroe High School students on Friday, August 31 in regard to cyber security, cyber bullying, sexting, and bullying behaviors in a general assembly format. The session was extremely informative as Mr. St. Clair provided examples to students of ramifications of behaviors such as sexting and bullying, or cyber bullying, and gave practical advice on how to avoid becoming involved in such practices.
James Monroe High School is fortunate to be supported by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and Monroe County Prosecutor's Office to offer these educational sessions to our students. This educational general assembly followed an advisory lesson on digital citizenship in which all students were trained. For more information on digital citizenship visit: https://www.commonsense.org/education/training Any sophomore or junior interested in taking the PSAT test this year should sign-up in the school counseling office by Friday, August 31st.
JMHS seniors, Mannie Blanco, Carter Brown, Brady Chinault, Brady Davis and Katelyn Roberts spent a week this summer at Camp Dawson for YLA Senior Leadership Camp. Camp participants spend the week building leadership skills and learning how to apply those skills to making a positive impact in the school and community. All three young men would recommend the camp to their peers. Each said the camp provides opportunities to better one's self, while making new friends.
JMHS Junior, Kaleb Harper, attended Camp STEM at WVU Tech for the second straight summer. Camp STEM is a learning opportunity for students interested in the STEM field. This year, students learned about surveying, race car aerodynamics, programming, robotics, designing water pumps and more. In addition to the STEM educational activities, students also gain insight in to college campus life. The topics and experiments covered at camp change from year to year. Kaleb would recommend this camp to his peers, as it is a "fun experience".
JMHS Seniors, Blaize Ferguson and Thad Fullen, were selected to represent JMHS at Boys State this past summer. Blaize and Thad both served as county magistrates at the camp, where they learned about different aspects of our government. Both young men met several new friends at camp, and they are already talking about Mavericks friends that may enjoy going next year.
JMHS students, Jessica Flack, Jasmine Hoke and Kaine Thorne, attended a summer program with Upward Bound at Concord University. The Upward Bound summer program provides students the opportunity to stay on campus at Concord University for several weeks. Students spend their mornings in classes to prepare them for the upcoming school year. The afternoon and evening hours are spent going on field trips and completing classroom experiments. This summer students were able to visit Weston Asylum and Myrtle Beach, as part of the experience. Each Maverick student in attendance reported enjoying the experience and would recommend it to their peers.
On August 24th, all students set their goals for this school year in Advisory class. These goals will be reviewed in January and again in May. Students also updated their Personalized Education Plans (PEPs). Let's start the year off strong this year Mavs!
JMHS Sophomore, Gavin Taylor, visited Camp Dawson this summer for the JCLC camp. JCLC works to help students build leadership skills. Gavin served as team leader on a boating exercise where his team achieved their goal. Gavin reported that he enjoyed meeting new friends at the camp.
