The Davis-Michael Scholars Program of the WVU Davis College of Agriculture and the West Virginia Veterinary Medical Association invites interested high and middle school students to the 7th Annual Veterinary Career Day. The event will be held on Saturday, October 7th from 9:00am to 2:00pm at the WVU Erickson Alumni Center in Morgantown, WV. There is no cost to attend the event. The registration deadline is September 29th. Parents attending with their child must also register.
The day's program will provide an overview of the Davis-Michael Scholars Program, involving faculty in the Davis College and Davis-Michael Scholars. Participants will be introduced to many of the career tracks available with a veterinary degree, how to apply for the Davis-Michael Scholarship, requirements to gain admittance to WVU and Veterinary Colleges, how the West Virginia Student Contract Program works and answer any questions about these topics and more. Over 60 juniors and seniors visited Bluefield State College and Concord University on Thursday, September 28th. The students toured both campuses, heard presentations from professors and enjoyed lunch in the Student Center at CU. Both BSC and CU representatives made our students feel welcome and encouraged them to contact the schools with any questions.
Students in Mrs. Crabtree's ACT Test Prep class hosted an ACT Tip Forum on Thursday, September 21 during 2nd period. Juniors and seniors were invited to participate. Student representatives from the ACT Test Prep course shared tips from personal experiences and answered questions from the audience. The students did a terrific job! Click here for more information. JMHS hosted its annual College and Career Fair on Wednesday, September 20th from 9:00am to 11:00am. Over 50 college and career representatives were on site to speak with our students about their future plans. All Mavericks students were able to attend the event. Students spoke with college and career representatives about different programs, employment opportunities and more. We are very thankful for the career representatives in our area that volunteered their time to work with our students!
Monroe County Magistrate Kevin Miller spoke with social studies classes Friday, September 15th as part of Constitution Week. Both students and teachers enjoyed the visit. Thank you Mr. Miller for helping educate our students! Seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend financial aid night on September14th at 5:30. Judy Kee-Smith from the WVHEPC will be here to present on financial aid, scholarships and more. Mrs. Courtney Smith from the GVCF will be here to introduce the new online scholarship application process for our local scholarships. Registration for this event is not required. We hope to see you there!
Mrs. Debbie Curry with Marshall University will be at JMHS on Thursday, September 14th to speak with Mrs. Coulter's Human Anatomy class about medical school, health care careers and Marshall University's accelerated medical program. Students who are not in Mrs. Coulter's Human Anatomy class that would like to attend should sign up with Mrs. Coulter.
On Tuesday, September 12th, juniors and seniors at JMHS traveled to Bluefield State College for a presentation on distracted driving. Students participated in several different activities including a distracted driving simulation game. They also heard a powerful presentation from Officer Ballard with the Mercer County Sheriff's Office. We are very thankful to BSC police officers that set this up for our students. On Friday, September 8th, honor roll students were recognized for their achievements at the annual fall academic pep rally. Students who earned all A's in the spring of 2017 received a keytag that will grant them free admission to sports events at JMHS this fall. Students who earned A's & B's last spring received a keytag that will grant them reduced admission to sports events. We are very proud of our Maverick scholars! |
