Fall is a great time to begin looking at colleges. James Monroe student James Sneddon, who wishes to pursue medicine as a career, meets with Megan Hackney from Marshall University. Marshall University offers an accelerated BS to MD program for students who qualify. Throughout October and November, the school counseling department has arranged for many colleges to visit James Monroe. Encourage your child to drop by during lunch shifts and speak with representatives!
James Monroe High School Science Department including Kristen Dillon, Deana Wills, David Johnson and Josh Hitt sponsored Deborah Seals, Program Specialist for the American Lung Association covering Virginia and West Virginia on September 30, 2019. All high school science classes rotated through the presentation on the dangers of Radon. Students were given free Radon Test Kits to take home to their parents/guardians. This is important because you can not smell Radon, which is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that gets inside homes and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. The only way to know if Radon is in your home is to test for it. For more information about the dangers of Radon in homes, you may visit https://www.lung.org.

Following the New River CTC tour and breakout sessions, JMHS students enjoyed lunch at Jim's Drive Inn. Following lunch, students were treated to a tour of the Greenbrier County Courthouse by Jamie Baker. Students were shown the courtroom, met Prosecuting Attorney Patrick Via, Sheriff Bruce Sloan, and visited the County Clerk's office. One our students was chosen to look up their birth record in the birth ledgers, since she was born in Greenbrier County. Expanding student's college and career knowledge is a vital and enriching part of the high school student educational experience. Students and staff at JMHS spent 9/11/19 in remembrance. Throughout the day classroom activities were completed and discussions were held about that defining day in history. The morning began with a moment of silence to remember and honor the 2996 victims and their families, as well as, the first responders who risked their lives to help save others. Corey Miller, social studies teacher, used the PA to make announcements throughout the morning highlighting the timeline of the horrific events. Here at JMHS, we are grateful for the heroes who were there on that day, and for those who continue to serve our great nation. We will never forget.
The James Monroe High School chapter of the National Honor Society held it's first meeting on September 10th, 2019 to elect officers, sign up for community service activities and make plans for anti-bullying month (October) and the College and Career Fair (September 18th).

James Monroe High School began a series of fall resource workshops on September 10th with guest speaker Alicia Walker, Licensed Psychologist with Monroe Health Center. Ms. Walker presented information on stress and anxiety in teens, the triggers for common teen stress, how to identify what they are and techniques for reducing stress. She shared that around 80% of high school students experience stress in their normal, day to day lives, and that sometimes stress can be useful to help us get focused and perform better. She emphasized that students need to be able to identify when they are feeling too much stress and to ask for help when this occurs.
Upcoming fall workshops include Date Safely (Jessica Bender, Family Refuge Center), Financial Literacy-(Bank of Monroe- Jim King and Lori Wickline) and Use Technology to Organize My Life (Bobbie Tuggle, Monroe County Schools). |
