JMHS students entered pieces into the first annual Peterstown Fall Festival Photography Show sponsored by the Monroe Arts Alliance and Monroe Tourism. The show was open to professionals and amateur photographers. Categories were: farm life, nature-wildlife or landscapes, portraits, and miscellaneous. The entries were judged by two professional photographers. We are very proud of the students listed below who brought home winning pieces!
1st place: Alyssa Hoover 3rd place: Meghan Cantrell JMHS Students, Alyssa Hoover and Arianna Milller, teamed up with the school counseling office to present a bullying prevention lesson to Mr. Phillips' Health class on Friday, October 16th. The lesson focused on defining bullying terms, effects of bullying and strategies for standing up to bullies. Specifically, students in the class were encouraged to be active bystanders who help stop bullying. We are very proud of Alyssa and Arianna for their hard work on this project.
YoungArts is a life-changing program for young artists. Applications for the program are currently being accepted. Selected applicants will be invited to participate in the National YoungArts Week and/or Regional Programs in Miami, New York and Los Angeles, where they will take Master classes with world-renowned artists and perform in the most prestigious venues in the country. On Thursday, October 15th the JMHS soccer team showed their support of the JMHS Bullying Prevention campaign titled "Be Brave" by painting the logo on their arms. Additionally, the students added the breast cancer awareness ribbon in support of women who are bravely fighting cancer. These girls make us proud!
An admissions counselor representing WV State will be at JMHS on October 15th during both lunch shifts to talk to students interested in attending WV State. The counselor will talk to students about admissions requirements, scholarships, university organizations and more.
The ASVAB test will be administered to all juniors on Tuesday, October 13th at 9:00. Sophomores and seniors who would like to take the test should sign up in the guidance office. The ASVAB is a timed multi-aptitude test, which is given at over 14,000 schools and Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) nationwide and is developed and maintained by the Department of Defense.
Cadets from the JROTC program did well at today's Fit Five competition. Our female cadets placed 2nd in the women's tug of war. The academic team placed third. We had two cadets that won individual awards. Austin Waddell brought back 2nd place in individual drill and 7th place in the mile run. And Dakota Copenhaver placed 8th in the mile run. Great job Maverick cadets!!!
On Sunday, October 4th, JMHS students Amanda Pitt, Callie Davis and Antonella Blanco attended Academy Day at Woodrow Wilson High School. Senator Shelley Moore Capito extended invitations to West Virginia students, parents and school counselors to attend this event. Representatives from the U.S. Federal Service Academies were there available to answer questions regarding the educational, physical and recreational requirements to attend these prestigious institutions or obtain an ROTC scholarship. Our students represented us well at the event, and they all had a great experience there.
Fifteen students from JMHS will be traveling with students from Summers County High and Pikeview High to visit the WVU campus today, Monday, October 5th. Mr. Geoffrey McClendon, with the WVU Office of Admissions, graciously organized this opportunity for students in our area. We are thankful that he is willing to travel with our students to see the campus of the Mountaineers. Another big thank you goes out to Mrs. Alicia Mann and Mrs. Kristen Dillon for chaperoning the trip!
