Student members of the James Monroe High School National Honor Society Nursing Home Committee will be volunteering at Springfield Center again this year. On Wednesday, October 30th, they enjoyed several games of Bingo with the residents. They will be volunteering again in December to decorate for Christmas.
On Friday, October 18th, Susan Richardson and Jonna Dahmer with the Division of Rehabilitative Services presented to students in several different classes at James Monroe High School on career readiness skills. Interview preparation, questions and etiquette were among the topics discussed. DRS provides both individual and large group services to JMHS students. JMHS SENIOR ATHLETES VISIT MVEMS, PES AND PMS AS PART OF NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK ACTIVITIES10/17/2019
Several senior athletes had lunch with students at Mountain View and Peterstown schools on Thursday, October 17th. The seniors ate lunch with students speaking to them about eating healthy and life as a high school student and athlete. They were also able to participate in some of the PE classes. James Monroe High School National Honor Society members, Amanda Coe, Sierra Ferguson and Kiera Conner, presented a lesson on bullying prevention to Mr. Phillips Health classes on Tuesday, October 15th. The presentation featured a video demonstrating the positive ripple effects of one small act of kindness. The presenters also had students complete an activity that illustrates how insults and negative interactions can "wrinkle" a person's self esteem. At the end of the lesson, students signed a pledge against bullying. October is National Bullying Prevention month. Kelsey Reed and Katlyn Roberts, both 2019 graduates of James Monroe High School, returned to JMHS on Friday, October 11th to speak with juniors and seniors enrolled in Mr. Adam Dixon's classes. Kelsey and Katelyn spoke with the students about finishing out their senior year and transitioning to higher education. They provided tips on financial aid, college scheduling, preparing for college life and time management, among other things. Kelsey and Katelyn are both students in the Radiologic Technology program at Bluefield State College.
James Monroe National Honor Society students visited the Monroe Historical Museum, The Carriage House, The Log Cabin and Ames Clair Hall on the morning of October 10th. Monroe County Historical Society members Lynn Mitchell Cutter, Barbara and Fred Ziegler, Doris Franklin, and Tom Bare facilitated these tours, engaging the students in local history. Following the tours, students enjoyed a presentation from Brian Wickline, WVU Agricultural Agent on the economic impact of agricultural products in Monroe County in relation to West Virginia and the United States. Students spent the afternoon at Byrnside Branch Farm, navigating the corn maze and taking a hayride. The afternoon concluded with a presentation by Allison Echols Tomlinson on Agrotourism in Monroe County. One goal of the James Monroe National Honor Society this school year was to focus on developing pride in our beautiful Monroe County and State of West Virginia.
Jim King, President and CEO, and Lori Wickline, Loan Officer, of The Bank of Monroe spoke to all James Monroe High School students through the Fall Seminar Series on October 8th, 2019. This presentation was developed by The Bank of Monroe to meet a need expressed by students in their end of the school year 2019 school counseling survey. Students wanted to know more about personal finance. The Bank of Monroe presented students with information on proper documentation needed to open a personal deposit account, explained various types of checking and savings accounts, illustrated how to prepare a deposit slip and write a check, illustrated how to fill out a check register, and fielded questions from the student body. Open discussions about overdrawing accounts, using a voided check to begin the payroll process, what to do if your debit card is stolen and other common questions were addressed. In addition, Mrs. Wickline spoke about the advantages of banking locally.
One of Congresswoman Miller’s greatest honors is to be able to nominate young men and women for appointment to one of our nation’s military service academies. In order to determine the best candidates for nominations, she is conducting a Service Academy Day event for southern West Virginia’s best and brightest. She would be honored to have you join her at Huntington High School on Sunday,October 6, from 2–4 p.m. for an informational panel discussion on how to apply to one of the various academies. Representatives from all five academies will be on hand, as well as members of the Marshall/WVU ROTC.
This event is open to all students, grades (9-12), parents, teachers and staff. James Monroe High School sponsored a FAFSA workshop for seniors and their parents on October 3rd, 2019 from noon until 7:00 pm. Mrs. Judy Kee Smith from the College Foundation of West Virginia helped families, one on one, complete their child's FAFSA in preparation to attend college or trade school next year. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for school year 2020-2021 opened up on October 1st. To complete, go to FAFSA.gov to get started.
