On November 11, seventeen members of James Monroe High School's Youth Leadership Association (YLA) traveled to Jackson's Mill for the annual YLA Fall Conference program. The conference lasted from five o'clock on November 11 to noon on Sunday November 13. At Jackson's Mill the students took place in activities to strengthen important skills, such as team building, communication, leadership, and government. Activities such as rocket building, rocket launching, folk dancing, line dancing, a variety show, and board games were enjoyed by the participants. During the conference, a certain time was set aside for practicing other YLA programs such as Model United Nations (MUN) and Youth in Government (YG). Fall Conference is one of many programs offered by the Youth Leadership Association (YLA) that strengthens student’s abilities in leadership, entrepreneurship, and civic duty in one’s community. Members of the National Honor Society visited residents at the Springfield Nursing Home on Tuesday, November 29th to help decorate for Christmas. Article written by Sidney Karnes (Reporter) On November 7th, James Monroe High School’s Youth Leadership Association succeeded in running our county’s second Model United Nations Conference. The students began trickling into the auditorium for a quick crash course on how the conference would run throughout the course of the day. The purpose of the conference was to aid with preparation for the upcoming competitions such as: Woodrow Wilson MUN, YLA MUN, and William and Mary MUN. Many students from James Monroe, Peterstown , and Mountain View participated. In total, eighteen resolutions were presented in four separate councils, which were held in separate rooms at the high school. Our councils were run by our council presidents from James Monroe, being Matthew Meadows, Whitney Hunt, and Austin Toney. Miles Smith, our district YLA director, also contributed to the conference by running a council himself. The General Assembly was run by the President of JMHS MUN, Carter Bonds. The purpose of the Model United Nations program is to encourage youth to become more involved and informed on issues that are on a global scale. While they are learning about their country’s perspective during the periods of research that they are given, they are unknowingly picking up essential skills that will aid them in the years to come, such as learning how to cooperate with others who might not have the same opinion. The students involved in this Model UN would like to thank Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Scott Womack, Ashley Mann, Miles Smith, and anyone else who was involved in making this possible. Look for more information on our ventures in upcoming editions. On Monday, November 7th following parent-teacher conferences, over 100 students at James Monroe were recognized for achieving academic success in a variety of different fields. Students were recognized for strong Smarter-Balanced scores, passing scores on Advanced Placement tests, and Promise eligible ACT scores, as well as a few other specialized awards. The auditorium at JMHS was filled with parents and students. We are excited about the successes our students have achieved thus far!
