Whitney Hunt and Bryce Dickerson, James Monroe High School seniors, spearheaded a voter registration campaign on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. Lee Dean from the WV Secretary of State's office and Pam Scott from the Month County Clerk's office assisted James Monroe in their quest to register 100 percent of the senior class to vote, which will earn James Monroe the prestigious Jennings Randolph Award.

The James Monroe National Honor Society students visited Springfield Nursing Home on November 29 to assist staff and residents decorate for Christmas. Representatives from Upward Bound will be at JMHS during both lunch shifts on Monday, November 27th to meet with students interested in the program. Upward Bound is a Federal TRIO Program funded through the US Department of Education. Acceptance into the program is dependent upon meeting eligibility criteria which includes being a prospective first generation college student. The program provides peer tutoring, ACT/SAT preparation, Advising (academic, career and personal), Financial Aid Awareness and Enrichment Activities, all free to charge. The program also sponsors a summer camp at Concord University where students can earn up to 6 hours of college credit. Students interested in applying should see the school counseling office.
The Lions Youth Exchange Contest is now open and entries are due by November 15, 2017. The travel grant provides funds for students in grades 10-12 ages 17-21 or a recent graduate toward a four to six week cultural exchange to Finland, Japan, Italy, Peru, Germany, Frnace or Australia during the summer of 2016. James Monroe High School celebrated College Application & Exploration Week November 6-9, hosting nine colleges throughout the week including West Virginia University, Marshall University, Fairmont State University, Concord University, Bluefield State College, Dabney S Lancaster Community College, New River Community and Technical College, Glenville State College and WVU Institute of Technology. The WV College Foundation of West Virginia (CFWV) partnered with West Virginia Schools to increase awareness about opportunities through the WV College System including programs of study and scholarship opportunities. On average, the benefits of a four-year degree are equivalent to an investment that returns 15.2 percent annually-more than double the average return to stock market investments since 1950 (CFWV.com). Mavericks students competed in a college trivia contest during the week of November 6-9 to win gas cards. CFWV is West Virginia's free college and career planning website, offering help in planning, applying, and paying for college by visiting the College Foundation website at cfwv.com. Pictured Above:

JMHS will be using an online scholarship portal this year for its local scholarship offerings. Mrs. Smith will be helping students create accounts and answering questions about the online application. We are very excited about the new scholarship application process, and we are thankful to Courtney for all of her help in implementing it.
Students in Mrs. Bennett's CNA classes will be hosting a blood drive at JMHS on Monday, November 13th. Teachers and students who wish to donate blood can sign up now.
NRCTC Welding Instructor, Stephen Bowyer will be speaking to Mr. Hill's Agriculture Mechanics classes, as well as other interested students, on Friday, November 3rd about careers in welding. He will also speak with the students about summer school opportunities for high school students, and the welding programs offered to graduates at NRCTC.
