Last Summer over 500 lucky high school students spent the month of July at Duke University taking classes, going on excursions, enjoying great residential activities, and making friends from around the world!

If you are currently in grades 9 -12, you can enjoy personal enrichment classes with a global perspective through Summer Academy During this holiday season, clubs at James Monroe participated in a Holiday decorating tree contest. The students and faculty had a good time decorating their trees. The commons area at the school was very fun and bright! The winning tree was decorated by students in our JROTC courses. Thanks to everyone who participated! First semester exams are quickly approaching. Students should begin preparing for exams at the start of December. For assistance with developing good study habits, please visit the academic tab or see us in the school counseling office. Be certain to speak with teachers about what to study. Please take advantage of after-school tutoring opportunities, as well.
1st & 2nd blocks: December 20 3rd & 4th blocks: December 21 Make-Ups: January 3rd On Friday, December 16th several members of the JMHS National Honor Society visited Springfield Nursing Home to spread Christmas cheer. Students and residents made a snowman craft and played bingo, while listening to Christmas tunes. The students had a great visit with the residents. They are planning to continue this service project throughout this school year.
The JMHS Band performed for students at JMHS on Monday, December 12 at 2:45pm. The students did a terrific job showing off their talents for the school. A collection of holiday music was shared in different tempos and genres. Band director, Tyler Lundy, invites members of the community to come out and support the JMHS band on Tuesday, December 13th at 6:00pm. It will surely be a great show!

After school STEM tutoring will begin on Tuesday, December 6th. Dr. Nakka will be working with students each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This program is not only for math tutoring, but also for STEM exploration. He is planning to work with students on a number of different STEM topics, including robotics. If you are interested in participating, see Dr. Nakka.
For current sophomores, a chance to experience a summer that's so good you cannot even imagine it lies in the Governor's School for the Arts (GSA). The 2016 session of this outstanding opportunity to help young artists develop their talents and expand their horizons will take ion the vibrant campus of Marshall University. Letters About Literature, a project of the West Virginia Center for the Book, is a reading and writing contest for students in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to that author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters About Literature awards prizes on both the state and national levels. A panel of West Virginia judges will select the top essayists in our state. State winners will receive a cash award and advance to the national level judging. A panel of national judges for the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress will select one national winner per competition level. The deadline for entry is December 2.
