The James Monroe High School (JMHS) Model United Nations (UN) Team recently traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to compete in the 2018 Georgia Tech Model United Nations Conference. The conference itself was held on Monday, October 8th, and Tuesday, October 9th, in which seven JMHS students represented the Syrian Arab Republic in various committees dealing with a wide array of international topics. The conference was broken down into multiple committees, each dealing with an important international issue. Within the committee, students formed groups with other students from around the south-east to develop clauses to form a working paper. Eventually these would create resolutions, which were then presented, debated, and declared passed or failed. The James Monroe delegation was quite successful, with several members becoming sponsors of resolutions that passed through their respective committee, sparking well-spoken debate. In the evenings, the students got to explore attractions in the city. Students visited the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s home and church. The Maverick Debaters also had the opportunity to dine at a Lebanese Restaurant with students from New Jersey City University who were in town for a conference with their college president, who happens to be Dr. Womack’s sister. The JMHS students also got to eat at locations which have become a tradition for the team: The Varsity, Mary Mac’s Tea Room, and the home of Darwin and Mary Womack (Colonel Womack’s parents.) The trip would not have been possible without the generosity of the Monroe County Board of Education, who approved funds from the school levy to assist with the trip, as well as the tireless efforts of Mrs. Ashley Mann in putting together the trip. Trips such as these provide the margin of excellence which enhances the ability of JMHS students to think critically, practice empathy, and communicate clearly in a formal setting. DRONE WORKSHOP HELD AT CONCORD UNIVERSITY
