FIRST2 is a new NSF-funded project to better support first generation college students who are potentially interested in STEM fields in their first 2 years of undergrad. The project offers current high school seniors a PAID 2-week internship at Greenbank Observatory in radio astronomy or at Fairmont in the Solar Army (working on using sunlight to split water into hydrogen fuel!). During the academic year, participants will have a weekly STEM support session with faculty at WVU, Fairmont, Marshall or Glenville (or virtually at other WV schools) to help navigate and thrive in college and STEM classes, as well as learn to be an ambassador for STEM and first generation college students.
Finally, this program will offer participants funding to return to their home high school and serve as Hometown Ambassador, serving as a resource to high school students as well as to the k12 and higher ed systems so that we can all grow in the direction of a better WV through increasing the success of our students. The application priority deadline is April 1. For more information, see the school counseling office. Comments are closed.
