Academic Counseling at JMHS
Academic counseling at JMHS is provided to students regarding curricular issues, postsecondary schooling, career guidance and study skills. Students are assisted with their needs in both individual and group counseling sessions. Please use the links below to assist you with academic planning. Please feel free to contact us at any point with questions or concerns.
Scheduling: Each spring students register for classes through arena scheduling. With this scheduling method, students are able to select the schedules that they desire. We will do our best to accommodate these requests after reviewing student credits and career concentrations.
Career Clusters: Students enrolled in WV schools must choose a career cluster in Grade 8. Students are able to change their career clusters at any point, as long as they have time to complete their requirements before graduation. We recommend that students make their final selections before entering their junior year. Career clusters are broad groupings of related occupations representative of the types of occupations available in the world of work. There are sixteen career clusters offered in West Virginia. These sixteen career clusters are part of the nationwide common core initiative. After exploring the JMHS curriculum, students will select a career concentration within their career cluster.
Career Concentrations: Career concentrations consist of a grouping of occupations with significant commonalities within a career cluster. Career concentrations at JMHS require four courses.
Personalized Student Planning: A Personalized Education Plan (PEP) is developed collaboratively, involving students, parents/guardians and school staff. During the 8th grade year, each student's PEP is developed based on each student's identified career aspirations. The PEP is reviewed annually in grades 9-12 with the student and his or her parents/guardians and is signed and dated during each annual review. Students may amend his or her PEP at the end of each semester as long as it does not interfere with the completion of graduation requirements.
Early Enrollment College Courses: Monroe County Schools has partnered with several local universities to offer college courses to current juniors and seniors. The Monroe County Board of Education will cover the cost of tuition for these courses. Students will only be responsible for purchasing textbooks and paying additional fees that the courses may require. See the links below for more information:
