Although many scholarship deadlines aren't until the spring, please don't wait until then to apply for them! It is always in your best interest to apply early and ensure that you have all required recommendation letters from your teachers and counselors.
Check out www.gvfoundation.org/#!volunteer for volunteer opportunities in our area that can help strengthen your resume. You can also follow The Greater Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation on twitter for news of single-day volunteer opportunities.
PROMISE Scholarship: (For the class of 2022 and 2023) The PROMISE Scholarship is a merit-based financial aid program for West Virginia residents. Eligible high school graduates will receive annual awards up to $5,000 to cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees at West Virginia institutions. Students must earn an overall GPA, as well as, a core GPA of 3.0. Additionally, eligible students will score a minimum of 19 in each ACT subject area with an overall score at or above a 21 OR an overall score of 1080 on the SAT (at least a 510 in math and at least a 510 in reading). Students must apply for the scholarship by March 1. Students can apply before they meet the eligibility criteria. Click here to apply now.
National Scholarships: Students planning to attend college should be actively seeking financial assistance. There is free money out there!! Who better to receive it than you? Three sites that we recommend to use in your search for scholarships are: Careeronestop, CFWV, College Board, Fastweb, and Scholarships.com. Please be careful when using other sites. Unfortunately, there are sites that try to scam visitors. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Be wary of sites with guarantees, upfront costs and/or credit card information requests. For more information about scams or potential scholarships, visit http://www.finaid.org/.
Academic Common Market: The Academic Common Market provides students who are seeking a specialized degree not offered in WV the opportunity to pay in-state tuition at an out-of-state institution. Click here to search for available programs.
Letters of Recommendation: You need to ask individuals for letters of recommendation at least two weeks prior to the date that you need them. Do NOT wait until the day before your scholarship is due to approach your references. In order to receive a great letter of recommendation, your references need time to review your credentials. How are they to do this? Before approaching someone for a letter of recommendation, you should prepare a resume highlighting your high school experiences. This will allow you to showcase your accomplishments, many of which your reference may not know about. You want to provide your reference with as much information as possible so they can accurately describe how AMAZING you are! Click here to access a sample resume format. You may want to add to, delete, reformat, etc to this resume. It is simply a sample from a former student.
