Student volunteers from each grade level worked this month to celebrate Black History Month. There were several different venues for helping educate the student body about African American history. Students created and presented PSAs that played on WHFI 106.7 throughout the month. Junior Maegan Crawford created a Powerpoint with various facts that is running with the announcements on the tv in the Commons Area. Three students teamed up to design and put up a bulletin board. We are proud of our Maverick students for working to create an inclusive, culturally responsible environment for all students.

Dear Member of the Junior Class:
Applications to the West Virginia Governor’s Honors Academy (GHA) are available at www.govschools.wv.gov, and we hope that you will visit the site today to read about the exciting opportunity for GHA 2021. GHA is about learning in a safe environment, and this year it means that the academy is going to be delivered on a virtual platform. Classes will be bold, exciting and interactive. The curriculum is designed as a unique supplement to the usual high school curriculum. It is neither an acceleration of high school nor an anticipation of college curricula. If selected, you will be led to explore cutting-edge theories in the arts and sciences and develop a greater understanding of how art, culture, and knowledge change with time. You’ll be challenged to develop the rigorous creative and intellectual skills that will be critical to leading a well-lived life and for making positive contributions to your communities and to society at large. We will invite up to 170 students, including 15 career/technical students to participate this year. Each county superintendent has the privilege of selecting two students to attend and nominating several more for the statewide pool from those who apply. Those nominated for the statewide pool will be considered for the extra slots. Thanks to your guidance counselor and technology, we can contact each of you individually, and we hope that many of you take advantage of the opportunity. Financed through funding by the legislature and Marshall University, the West Virginia Governor’s Honors Academy is sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education. *GHA candidates must have a minimum 3.5 GPA or be in the top 10% of the junior class. Sincerely, Sherry Keffer Coordinator West Virginia Department of Education [email protected] TO: Parents of students wanting to participate in the 2021 National Archery in the School Program (NASP)
