The following is an article by Xander Lewis courtesy of The Maverick Express regarding bullying prevention awareness activities at James Monroe this month.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month! James Monroe High School has done several things to recognize this month and its importance. Morgan Mills and Abby Craghead did a PSA for our local radio station, WH-FI 106.7. Hope Woods and Katherine Viars begin each week with their “Weekly Words of Encouragement” over the morning announcements. Haley Hunnicutt, Addison Hines, Madison Ingles, Sienna Hixon, and Layna Smith all helped create a bulletin board to display in the school halls. Mary Beth Meadows created an Educational PowerPoint to display on the television in the commons area. I would like to congratulate all the students and staff in their efforts to help prevent bullying and bring awareness to this important month, especially in a high school setting. West Virginia's 2021-22 Statewide Financial Aid Workshop Series Schedule is now available. These workshops cover various topics related to financial aid and scholarships. On Thursday, November 28th James Monroe students were treated to a drug prevention presentation by recovering addict, Michael Payden. Mr. Payden struggled with addiction through his teenage years and into his early twenties. He shared his experiences, hardships, consequences and path to recovery with the students. Since graduating from a sober living program in WV, he has stayed clean and worked to become a Peer Recovery Support Specialist for other addicts. His message was a strong message for our students.
The end of the first nine weeks is October 20th. Students should have any assignments that are not yet past due submitted at that time. Report cards will be mailed the following week.
Students planning to register for early enrollment college courses through WVU Tech will be doing so on Tuesday, October 19th during 4th period. The Monroe County Board of Education pays the tuition for these courses. Students are only responsible for the cost of textbooks. If you miss the enrollment meeting, visit https://www.wvutech.edu/techee/early-enrollment-types to register.
Senior meetings will begin on October 18th and run for the entire week. School counselors will be meeting with students to discuss plans for next year, including career and college pathways.

On October 6th, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, James Monroe High School (JMHS) held a FAFSA workshop. FAFSA stands for "Free Application for Federal Student Aid." FAFSA is used by students who plan to attend college, and it is required for both need-based and merit-based aid. The workshop was set up by the counseling office at JMHS. Judy Kee Smith, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC) Statewide Coordinator, met with seniors and their parents in the lecture room at the high school. They worked together to help the students complete their FAFSA applications. The event was well-attended, and many got the help they needed with this process. Application for FAFSA can be completed using the following link: fafsa.gov. Mr. Houck and Mrs. Jones met with Civics classes on Tuesday, October 12th to discuss SAT results and how those connect to Khan Academy accounts. Students were shown how to link the two accounts and use the data to practice for future tests. Khan Academy will provide students with lessons specific to their needs to help improve test scores.

On September 30th Monroe County School Nurse Jessica Thomas conducted a cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training course for the Seniors of James Monroe High School. The students learned useful facts on what to do if someone is choking, drowning, or is incapacitated, and they had the opportunity to practice these skills in a hands-on experience. The students learned about automated external defibrillator (AED) machines and how to use them as well. The Senior Class is thankful that the school gave us the opportunity to learn such a useful skill for our lives! All students in grades 9-11 will be taking the PSAT test on October 13th. This is a practice SAT test. Results will be used to tailor lessons to individual needs and learning outcomes. This is the first year all underclassmen have been provided this opportunity.
