We are truly blessed to live in a giving area where value is placed on education. In addition, Monroe County State and County Scholar designations were announced. Students are named state and county scholars for standing out among their peers with high GPA, attendance, ACT/SAT scores, and course load. They include the following seniors:

All 9th-12th grade students in West Virginia high schools, home schools, Scouts, FFA groups and 4-H Clubs are eligible to take part in the annual conservation education contest. Usually, the program is hands-on and in-person, but because of the pandemic, the WV Envirothon had a virtual format this year. The 2021 teams competed by computer in five areas: aquatics, soil, forestry, wildlife, and a current event, this year, water conservation. Teams are tested on their knowledge of natural resources, skills, and problem-solving abilities. By participating in the Envirothon program, students learn about West Virginia’s diverse ecosystem and how they can help conserve and protect it for future generations.
Over $15,000 in scholarships and cash are awarded at the event. The scholarships go to the first five teams and there is a cash stipend for the teams that score highest in each category and for the first-year team that scores the highest. The JMHS Maverick team consisted of Levi Logan, Colton Mason, Madison Noonkester, Wyatt Thornton, and team captain, Bryceson Whitt, with alternates Rudy Carpenter and Matthew Heller. All the Mavericks were 9th graders. The team was sponsored by Becky Crabtree, science teacher at JMHS. The team members and sponsor each received a tee shirt, a cash stipend for Best Rookie Team, and earned a $200 grant for JMHS which were all presented at the school on May 14. The contest is sponsored by the WV Conservation Agency. The Envirothon Committee members are hopeful that the 2022 competition will be held in person. The West Virginia Sheriffs’ Youth Leadership Academy is an annual, 6-day residential summer program for teenage citizens from throughout the State. The Academy seeks to deter risk-taking behavior patterns by introducing the participants to recreation alternatives and educating them on the negative consequences of drugs, alcohol, and violence. The Academy provides our youth with the leadership skills necessary for them to go back to their home communities and help others deal with these challenges. The Academy also encourages participation in citizenship activities and teaches responsibility. The Academy does require a certain amount of physical activity during the week. However…The Academy is for mainstream youth and is NOT a juvenile “boot camp”.
The Academy offers a challenging, educational, and fun summer camp experience!! Academy Staff The Academy staff consists of Sheriffs, Deputies, community volunteers, and other staff.
