April is Autism Awareness Month. Students at James Monroe High School and Monroe County Technical Center have been working to increase awareness and celebrate those with autism. Student members of Mrs. Julie Bradley’s Early Childhood Education program and Mrs. Erin Sowers’ Therapeutic Services program created and displayed educational materials throughout both schools. Several student volunteers read PSAs for WHFI 106.7, our local radio station. And senior Fayth Laxton put together an educational Powerpoint that ran with the announcements throughout the month. JMHS/MCTC students and staff joined schools throughout the county to celebrate World Autism Day by wearing blue. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication affecting 1 in 54 children. James Monroe High School Senior Fayth Laxton is sponsoring an aid drive to help the homeless. She notes that there are almost 600,000 homeless people in the United States, whose numbers continue to grow as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to have an impact on our country. Fayth is gathering commonly needed items to donate to charity groups who assist homeless people. These items include socks, peanut butter, toothbrushes, soap, can openers, and blankets. Students wishing to help can bring these items to school. Community members interested in assisting with this effort can contact Dr. Scott Womack at [email protected] or via phone at 304-753-5182. Let's all pitch in and help Fayth help the homeless!
