Three JMHS/MCTC JROTC cadets attended JCLC at Camp Dawson this past summer. JCLC is a leadership camp for JROTC cadets. Cadets are exposed to the military lifestyle while at this camp. All three JMHS attendees reported learning about leadership, respect and self-discipline. Each of them reporting repelling from the 100ft tower as their favorite experience. JMHS sophomore, Odin Howdock, said that there are "a lot of good experiences" at JCLC. Each of our cadets would recommend this camp to other students, especially those that wish to pursue a military career.
JMHS students, Brady Davis, Brady Chinault and Austin Toney, spent some time last summer at the Senior Leadership Summit in Parsons, WV. This camp provides students with the leadership skills necessary to help their community and school. Davis and Chinault both made friends from across WV and into Ohio through this experience. Brady Davis shared that the camp provides a fun environment where students can learn skills that can help them achieve success. Brady Chinault enjoyed working as a team to overcome obstacles. Austin likes that the camp provides an opportunity for attendees to focus on bettering themselves. They would all recommend this camp for other students. Austin has attended for 4 years, and both Brady's plan to return next summer.
JMHS Senior, Kameryn Fields, attended Hidden Promise at Glenville State College this past summer. Hidden Promise is an opportunity for students to see what college life is like. The camp focuses on preparing students for college and exposing them to the exciting opportunities it offers. Kameryn enjoyed meeting college professors and meeting other peers. She reports that it is the best camp she has ever attended. She would definitely recommend it to her peers, as it "such a fun and important camp."
JMHS Freshman, Jada Stutts, went to New River Community College to attend Forensics Camp this past summer. Forensic Camp focuses on a mock crime scene where students test drugs, use evidence bags, analyze fingerprints and learn about different aspects of crime scenes. Students are permitted to use lab tools, such as the infrared spectrum. Guest speakers present to attendees on different jobs in the field ranging from photography to lab reserach. Jada would recommend this camp to students interested in the field of forensics.
This camp is open to middle and high school students (grades 6-12). This year's session will be held June 12th-14th from 9:00-4:00 daily on the WVU Tech Campus in Beckley, WV. The registration fee is $225, which includes lunch each day and a WVU Tech t-shirt. The registration deadline is May 28. There are a limited number of registration spots available, and they are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The WV Sheriffs' Youth Leadership Academy is an annual, 6-day residential summer program for teenage citizens from throughout the state. The Academy provides our youth with the leadership skills necessary for them to go back to their home communities and help others deal life challenges. The Academy also encourages participation in citizenship activities and teaches responsibility. The 2017 Academy will be Sunday, July 16th through Friday, July 21st at Camp Ona in Milton, WV. First time applicants must be entering 9th grade in the Fall of 2017. Cadets must have at least a 2.0 GPA and submit a $100 Academy fee. The application deadline is May 15. Registration for our 2016 Experience Pharmacy Bootcamp is now open! The camp will take place June 20-23, 2017 on the University of Charleston campus in Charleston, WV. Some of the week’s events will include hands-on simulations, compounding, and IV lab experiences, as well as sessions on the history of pharmacy, medicinal plants, pharmaceutical career options, mock interviewing, personal statement review/preparation, and more!
The camp is a prime opportunity to gain insight and preparation for that next step toward a future in pharmacy. Whether students are interested in learning more about a pharmacy career as a whole, or need help preparing for the application process, the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy ExRx Boot camp will prove to be a worthwhile experience. Cost for the four-day camp is ONLY $99.00 per student, and includes meals, lodging, linens, towels, as well all activities and materials. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Camp STEM is a one-week summer program that shows students what engineering, math, science and technology are really all about. Camp STEM is instructed by professors who are experts in the fields of engineering, math, science and technology. The professors will guide students through various experiments, as well as provide detailed lectures and demonstrations. Current WVU Tech students in STEM majors will serve as guides throughout the camp. The camp will be June 18-23. Applications are open until April 17, 2017. You may apply at campstem.wvu.edu. Governors Entrepreneurship Camp applications are now available at www.govschools.wv.gov/gse. It starts on 7/5/17 and runs for three weeks. Students will develop, pitch and launch a new business venture! Only 60 students are chosen to attend, applications are due 4/15.
FIRST2 is a new NSF-funded project to better support first generation college students who are potentially interested in STEM fields in their first 2 years of undergrad. The project offers current high school seniors a PAID 2-week internship at Greenbank Observatory in radio astronomy or at Fairmont in the Solar Army (working on using sunlight to split water into hydrogen fuel!). During the academic year, participants will have a weekly STEM support session with faculty at WVU, Fairmont, Marshall or Glenville (or virtually at other WV schools) to help navigate and thrive in college and STEM classes, as well as learn to be an ambassador for STEM and first generation college students.
Finally, this program will offer participants funding to return to their home high school and serve as Hometown Ambassador, serving as a resource to high school students as well as to the k12 and higher ed systems so that we can all grow in the direction of a better WV through increasing the success of our students.
