JMHS students, Jessica Flack, Jasmine Hoke and Kaine Thorne, attended a summer program with Upward Bound at Concord University. The Upward Bound summer program provides students the opportunity to stay on campus at Concord University for several weeks. Students spend their mornings in classes to prepare them for the upcoming school year. The afternoon and evening hours are spent going on field trips and completing classroom experiments. This summer students were able to visit Weston Asylum and Myrtle Beach, as part of the experience. Each Maverick student in attendance reported enjoying the experience and would recommend it to their peers.
JMHS Sophomore, Gavin Taylor, visited Camp Dawson this summer for the JCLC camp. JCLC works to help students build leadership skills. Gavin served as team leader on a boating exercise where his team achieved their goal. Gavin reported that he enjoyed meeting new friends at the camp.
The WV Sheriffs' Youth Leadership Academy is an annual, 6-day residential summer program for teenage citizens from throughout the state. The Academy provides our youth with the leadership skills necessary for them to go back to their home communities and help others deal life challenges. The Academy also encourages participation in citizenship activities and teaches responsibility. The 2018 Academy will be Sunday, July 15th through Friday, July 20th at Camp Ona in Milton, WV. First time applicants must be entering 9th grade in the Fall of 2018. Cadets must have at least a 2.0 GPA and submit a $75 Academy fee. The application deadline is May 15. Registration for our 2016 Experience Pharmacy Bootcamp is now open! The camp will take place June 19-22, 2018 on the University of Charleston campus in Charleston, WV. Some of the week’s events will include hands-on simulations, compounding, and IV lab experiences, as well as sessions on the history of pharmacy, medicinal plants, pharmaceutical career options, mock interviewing, personal statement review/preparation, and more!
The camp is a prime opportunity to gain insight and preparation for that next step toward a future in pharmacy. Whether students are interested in learning more about a pharmacy career as a whole, or need help preparing for the application process, the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy ExRx Boot camp will prove to be a worthwhile experience. Cost for the four-day camp is ONLY $99.00 per student, and includes meals, lodging, linens, towels, as well all activities and materials. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Camp STEM brings students to WVU Tech’s campus in Beckley, West Virginia for college-level STEM instruction. Students can attend courses in a variety of STEM fields, such as computer science, chemistry, automotive engineering, electrical engineering and forensic science. WVU Tech professors will guide them through experiments, provide lectures and give demonstrations. Outside the classroom, students will work in teams on a robotics project, attend guest lectures by STEM professionals and embark on fields trips. The cost for this camp is $350 per camper, but full and partial need-based scholarships are available. At Camp STEM, students will experience campus life by living in our residence halls, eating in WVU Tech’s Bears Den dining hall and relaxing in one of our campus recreation facilities. Students are supervised by WVU Tech student counselors, who are upper-classmen studying STEM disciplines. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2018. The Governor's School of Entrepreneurship (GSE) is for high school students currently in ninth through eleventh grades. Young innovators learn how to create a scalable business model based on market feedback - and then have the opportunity to pitch and start the business. Kaleb Harper, a sophomore at JMHS, visited the WVU Tech campus this past summer at Camp STEM where he studied Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through courses and live demonstrations. Kaleb participated in learning activities from bridge building to forensics to medicine delivery. His favorite part was learning about electrical engineering and staying on the college campus. He shared that he would recommend this camp to other students.
JMHS senior, Remington Reece, learned a great deal about business this summer at the WVU Business Camp. Students at this camp are exposed to the many aspects of business and industry, covering topics such as: marketing, finance, operations, management information systems and supply chain within a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment. Remington enjoyed meeting WVU professors and other students from across the state. He would recommend this camp to other students, especially those interested in business because as Remington learned, "business is so much more than just owning a business".
Samantha Frazier, a senior at JMHS, spent three weeks last summer at Governor's Honors Academy. Governor's Honors Academy is a summer residential program for academically motivated upcoming high school seniors. While experiencing a taste of college life, these young scholars will have the opportunity to expand their horizons at the same time they bond with other students from across the state. Classes at GHA help prepare students for their future with classes covering everything from Shakespeare to tax preparation. Samantha would recommend this camp to other students, and she reports that it is "eye opening and very enjoyable".
JMHS junior, Matthew Hild, met many new friends while learning about STEM, personal responsibilities and camp challenges at 4H Camp in Summers County, WV. Matthew enjoyed the hands-on experiences the camp provides, and he would recommend this camp to other students.
