The U.S. Army Reserve Minuteman Scholarship was introduced in 2015 to enhance the Army Reserve’s ability to recruit highly qualified cadets every year. All qualified applicants for ROTC scholarships may apply for consideration for the 4-year Minuteman
scholarship. Each Army Reserve major subordinate command (MSC) has the ability to award four Minuteman Scholarships per year. The Minuteman Scholarship covers full tuition and fees (uncapped) at any college or university served by an Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) program, or can be used toward room and board, capped at $10,000 per year. Scholarship recipients also receive a yearly book allowance of $1,200 and a monthly stipend from $300 to $500 while attending school, depending on their year in the ROTC program. Minuteman Scholarship recipients must participate in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), in which they participate in an Army Reserve unit monthly drill and a 14-day annual training and are paid as a sergeant. After graduation and commissioning, Minuteman Scholarship recipients are guaranteed placement in the Army Reserve. The Letters About Literature competition, a reading promotion program of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress is supported locally by the West Virginia Center for the Book. To enter, young readers write a personal letter to an author explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or themselves. Readers can select authors from any genre —fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic. The program has three competition levels: upper elementary, middle school, and secondary. The contest theme encourages young readers to explore his or her personal response to a book then express that response in a creative, original way. The entry deadline is January 11, 2019. Visit http://www.read.gov/letters/states-list.html#west-virginia to enter the contest.
Each year, the U.S. Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Foundation grants $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities or vocational schools. The number of grants awarded annually is at the discretion of the Foundation and must be used for educational expenses in the first year of full-time study. Checks awarded will be made out in the name of the recipient and the educational institution of the recipient’s choice.
From September to November of each year, each JCI Senate state organization (or foundation) distributes to schools and boards of education throughout their state the necessary application forms for determination of the recipients of scholarship grants. The deadline for return of the completed application forms to the state chairperson is January 11, 2019. Do not submit the application to any address on the web page except those under the State Scholarship listing section (packages submitted to the wrong address will not be forwarded). Additional information is included in the Application instructions. Click here for more information. 2018-2019 Foundation Scholarship Application |
