The West Virginia Association of Orthopedic Executives (WVAOE) established the Joshua Tuck Scholarship in 2018 to help support a student studying healthcare management. We’re asking that you share this information with incoming students majoring in healthcare administration or healthcare management.
At the time of his death in 2017, Josh was the practice manager for the Charleston Area Medical Center Department of Orthopedic Surgery; in addition, he was vice president of WVAOE. The Joshua Tuck Scholarship has been created specifically to reward the outstanding scholastic achievements of high school seniors who plan to enter the healthcare management field. Complete eligibility rules and forms can be found on the “WVAOE Members” tab at www.wvos.org. Applicants (1) must be West Virginia high school seniors; (2) must enroll in Bluefield State College, Fairmont State University, Marshall University or WVU Tech; (3) major in a healthcare management program; and (4) submit a 450-500 word essay answering the question: “Describe your community’s issues with opioids and explain how you would reduce the problem.” You may access the application at wvos.org/wvaoe-josh-tuck-memorial-scholarship/. WVAOE will accept applications and accompanying essays postmarked between February 1, 2022 and March 31, 2022. From all the applications received, the WVAOE Board of Directors will select a single one-time only $1,500 scholarship recipient in April 2022. The winner will be announced at their high school awards assembly or commencement program, or by a COVID-19 appropriate method. Five Scholarships Available $2,000 each for 2022 High School Seniors:
1. Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship: This scholarship aims to award a student who is culturally, ethnically, and racially diverse. 2. STEM-Related Program of Study Scholarship: This scholarship aims to award a student who is entering a STEM-related program of study. 3. Ingevity Employee Relative Scholarship: This scholarship is to be provided to a relative of an existing employee at Ingevity, no specific study is required. 4. Generic Merit: No specific study required. 5. Generic Merit: No specific study required. Application Information: 1. Complete the student application. 2. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. 3. Provide one letter of recommendation, more are welcome. 4. Provide a personal statement with the application, 500 words or less describing why this scholarship is important to you and any other relevant information. 5. A student transcript is not required but highly recommended. 6. Must be attending a Trade School, Community College, or University beginning this Fall. This contest is designed to provide you with an opportunity to showcase your writing skills, share what you have learned about the Disability Rights Movement, use your ability to form and express opinions, and perhaps to earn some money to help you into your future! All WV high school seniors are invited to submit an entry.
While federal law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities, we still face barriers every day. The essay topic this year is: “How (insert name of famous person) Has Influenced Me” Pick a famous person with a disability that was born prior to 1970. Discuss the individual, his or her disability, and career and explain how his or her contributions have influenced you personally and your plans for the future. The top award will be presented to the state winner, and awards may be presented to first-place and secondplace entries from six Districts of our state. The awards are as follows: State Winner $3,250 District First Place $1,750 District Second Place $1,000 The West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services has generously provided funding for all awards. This scholarship will be awarded to promising high school seniors with disabilities who plan to attend a vocational or academic college and target a career in the technology industry. The scholarships are renewable – each winner who continues to meet the criteria is eligible to receive an annual award of $5,000 for up to four (4) consecutive years for a potential total $20,000 scholarship. All completed applications must be submitted by March 15, 2022. For more than 79 years, the WVU Alumni Association’s Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund (LPEF) has helped more than 4,500 deserving students realize their dreams at WVU. Funded entirely from unsolicited private donations, the LPEF is a contributing source of funds to the WVU Scholars Program. The LPEF was established in 1937 by the WVU Alumni Association and has more than $12 million in assets.
The LPEF supports a number of individual scholarships. Each year, approximately 400 scholarships will be awarded through the LPEF to deserving students, including valedictorians, student body presidents and other deserving Mountaineers. Application deadline is March 1st. Who is eligible to be considered for a Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund Scholarship? Students eligible for the LPEF scholarship must: Demonstrate a financial need; Be in adequate academic standing, with a minimum GPA of 2.75; Demonstrate good citizenship, as outlined in his/her extracurricular activities; and Legally reside in West Virginia.
