The American Civil Liberties Union of WV Foundation offers William Denman Youth Activist Scholarships of $1,000 to students who are devoted to standing up for civil liberties and want to go to college and make a difference in the world. The ACLU of WV is a non-profit organization devoted to defending and preserving the individual rights granted in the Constitution and Bill of Rights, including freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and the right to privacy. The ACLU also works to extend rights to people who have traditionally been denied their rights, including people of color; women; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender individuals; prisoners; and people with disabilities.
They are looking for scholarship applicants who demonstrate a commitment to equal rights and fairness through their personal actions and involvement in a school or community program focusing on any civil liberties issue, including non-discrimination in any form. In addition to demonstrating a strong commitment to civil liberties, each scholarship applicant must be a high school senior planning on entering an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student. Applicants also must have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation. Demonstrated financial need will also increase the student’s chances of qualifying for the scholarship. The application deadline is March 17,2017. Click here for an application. Comments are closed.
