The West Virginia Association of Orthopaedic Executives (WVAOE) has established the Joshua Tuck Scholarship to help support a student studying healthcare management.
At the time of his death in 2017, Josh was the practice manager for the Charleston Area Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery; in addition, he was vice president of WVAOE. The Joshua Tuck Scholarship is being created specifically to reward the outstanding scholastic achievements of high school seniors who plan to enter the healthcare management field. Complete eligibility rules and forms can be found under the “WVAOE Members” tab at www.wvos.com. Applicants (1) must be West Virginia high school seniors; (2) must enroll in Bluefield State College, Fairmont State University, Marshall University or WVU Tech; (3) major in a healthcare management program; and (4) submit a 300-500 word essay answering the question: “Describe your community’s issues with opioids and explain how you would reduce the problem.” Please click here for the application letter, form and required documentation. WVAOE will accept applications and accompanying essays postmarked between January 2, 2019 and March 31, 2019. From all the applications received, the WVAOE Board of Directors will select a single one-time only $2,500 scholarship recipient in April 2019. The winner will be announced at their high school awards assembly or commencement program. This scholarship is for the 19-20 academic year and available to high school students who are planning to study Business Administration at Concord University. To be awarded, students must be accepted and attend Concord University in Fall 2019. West Virginia Desk and Derrick Club members work for and support West Virginia's energy industries and affiliates. Their primary goal is to advance the education of the individuals who supply the Nation's energy today and in the years ahead. This is a one-time scholarship is the amount of $1,000. Scholarship criteria - A copy of the student's high school transcript with ACT/SAT score -An original essay of at least 300 words -A discussion of the applicant's history of leadership or service -At least one letter of recommendation from someone other than a relative -Application must be signed by applicant's counselor or principal -If any part of the criteria is missing, application will not be considered The West Virginia Pumpkin Festival is offering three scholarships to current seniors entering a public West Virginia college or university in the fall of 2016. The amount of each scholarship is $2,000. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA or above and must have completed the required community service. The West Virginia Association of Conservation Districts awards nine $500 college scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan on majoring in an agriculture related field. Students must submit applications to the WVACD Office at 742 Airport Road, Sutton WV 26601 by the first Monday in March. Recipients will be notified in May. Click here for an application.
Applications must be submitted on the most recent form revised 01/16/2018. All students enrolled at a West Virginia college or high school are invited to apply for the Pearl S. Buck Writing Competition. Awards of $1,000 each will be given to an undergraduate and graduate student winner, and a high school winner will receive $250 and a scholarship to the WVU English Department's Summer Scholars program ($600 value). Winning pieces will be those that best reflect the life and values of Pearl Buck. The Selection Committee will base its decision on the extent to which the writing reflects one or all of the following: expression of appreciation for difference and different cultures, including but no limited to Appalachia and China, social justice and women's perspectives. Applicants must submit an original writing in any literary genre (e.g., fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, essay, children's literature, play writing, blog, etc) no later than March 2, 2018. Word maximum is 10,000. All applicants will be notified by May 15 of status.
Winners and runners-up will be published in online format and housed, for historical purposes, with the Pearl S. buck collection at WVU. Winners and runners-up retain copyrights to their works, while granting a nonexclusive license to WVU to publish. All undergraduate students currently enrolled or high school students accepted full-time in a four-(4) year college or university program in Western Pennsylvania or West Virginia, which will lead to a career in the environmental fields are invited to apply for this scholarship. Applicants should have at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applications must be received by March 31, 2017. Application materials will be reviewed and awardees selected by the Scholarship Award Committee in May 2017. The Scholarship Award Committee may award up to $4,000 in scholarships to suitably qualified candidates. Recipients are judged by academic records, plan
of study, career goals, recommendations, and extra-curricular activities without consideration of sex, race, national origin, financial need, age or physical disability. Click here to apply! . The FOCLA has a scholarship for students attending a college or any other educational institution. Applilcants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA with an ACT score of 20 or higher. Students taking the SAT must have a score of 1400 or higher. Additionally, applicants must be able to demonstrate a financial need for the scholarship and have a mother, father, step-mother, step-father, sister, brother, grandmother or grandfather who has been employed, or is currently employed in a coal-related industry. The American Civil Liberties Union of WV Foundation offers William Denman Youth Activist Scholarships of $1,000 to students who are devoted to standing up for civil liberties and want to go to college and make a difference in the world. The ACLU of WV is a non-profit organization devoted to defending and preserving the individual rights granted in the Constitution and Bill of Rights, including freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and the right to privacy. The ACLU also works to extend rights to people who have traditionally been denied their rights, including people of color; women; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender individuals; prisoners; and people with disabilities.
They are looking for scholarship applicants who demonstrate a commitment to equal rights and fairness through their personal actions and involvement in a school or community program focusing on any civil liberties issue, including non-discrimination in any form. In addition to demonstrating a strong commitment to civil liberties, each scholarship applicant must be a high school senior planning on entering an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student. Applicants also must have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation.
