WVU is sponsoring a 4 day workshop for WV High School Writers from July 20-23. With workshops designed with the budding writer in mind, join WVU MFA grad and veteran creative writing teacher Natalie Sypolt. Attend craft discussions with the WVWW participants while focusing on generating new stories, poems, and more in a smaller, supportive setting. Nurture your writer’s voice with activities that will expand your imagination, meet new friends, and share your work at the WVWW open mic. Camp Kesem is a national non-profit with more than 80 chapters across the country serving over 6,000 children who are affected by a parent's cancer. Camp Kesem provides free summer camps and year-round support for children whose parents have or have had cancer, ages 6-18. Each chapter of Camp Kesem is ran by volunteer college students and teaches them leadership skills. However, there are full-time Camp Kesem staff that regulate and monitor each chapter.
West Virginia University's chapter of Camp Kesem will be hosting their second year of camp this summer and is aiming to serve 40 children in West Virginia and surrounding areas. Camp will be hosted at Camp Sandy Cove in High View, West Virginia (Hampshire County) from June 11th-16th. Transportation will be provided from Morgantown, and parents can drop their children off at the campsite if they prefer. This unique event will take place this Friday, March 17th at the Clay Center in Charleston starting at 9:00 a.m. There will also be an "Out of this World" Career Fair, where students can learn about careers in NASA and opportunities in the STEM fields. Come learn how students can follow in the footsteps of great West Virginians, Jon McBride, Katherine Johnson and Homer Hickam, who have made immeasurable contributions to NASA. If you can’t make it to Charleston on Friday, but would still like to watch the Skype from your classroom, office or personal computer, you are more than welcome to watch the live broadcast by tuning into NASA TV at NASA.gov. The Sc3 is a week-long leadership training event for high school students held annually at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Conservation Training Center in West Virginia. Students spend a week studying and discussing environmental, social, and economic interconnections to address climate change and conservation challenges affecting their generation – all while connecting with nature and new friends. Arena Scheduling will take place on Tuesday, March 14th for the 2018 school year. Students must have completed, signed PEP forms in order to participate. Be certain to turn your PEP form in to your Advisor by Tuesday. The end of the third nine weeks will be March 14th. Students, please be certain to complete and submit all make-up work before that time. If you need any assistance, please let Mrs. Dransfield or Mrs. Jones know. We are happy to help you make study guides, set goals and create assignment calendars, among other things. Gradecards will be given to students on Wednesday, March 22nd.
Attention High School Seniors! Interested in a summer job?
Energy Express is a 8 week summer reading and nutrition program across the state of West Virginia. Each summer 500 college students and college bound high school seniors are hired to serve as AmeriCorps members. Members earn a $1850 living allowance and a $1221 Segal Education Award that can be used towards college expenses. There are two positions with Energy Express: Mentor and Community Coordinator. Mentors work with a small group of 6-8 children on their literacy skills through reading, writing, art, non-competitive recreation, and drama. Community Coordinators recruit, train, and supervise volunteers, connect parents and community members to the site, and involve parents in their children’s learning. The application deadline is March 1st. See the school counseling office for more information. Girls State is a one week camp at Wheeling Jesuit University. Scholar students are nominated to attend this camp each year based on the following qualities: leadership, moral character, academic record, cooperation and service. This year the camp will run from June 11-16th. Student campers will participate in a mock government for the week where they learn about all levels of government including federal, county and city. Campers will discover resources available specifically for women in government. JMHS seniors, Cade and Carson Fisher, attended the prestigious Rhododendron Girls' State camp last summer. If you have an questions about the camp experience, feel free to speak with them. If you are interested in attending, stop by the school counseling office before March 1.
