On Friday, May 25th, JMHS will be holding its annual Awards Day ceremony. Family and friends are invited to join us in this day of recognition of our top students. 2018 State and County Scholars will be recognized, as well as, scholarship recipients of local and university scholarships. Tuesday, May 22 - 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th period exams Wednesday, May 23 - 5th, 6th and 7th period exams Thursday, May 24 - Make-up exams On Thursday, May 17, the Class of 2018 visited Mountain View Elementary and Middle School and Peterstown Elementary School for a cap and gown walk through. The graduates were greeted by the elementary and middle school students for high fives, smiles and congratulations. The Maverick graduates handed out inspiring messages of encouragement to the future Maverick students. Congratulations Class of 2018! You have represented your school well. The WV Sheriffs' Youth Leadership Academy is an annual, 6-day residential summer program for teenage citizens from throughout the state. The Academy provides our youth with the leadership skills necessary for them to go back to their home communities and help others deal life challenges. The Academy also encourages participation in citizenship activities and teaches responsibility. The 2018 Academy will be Sunday, July 15th through Friday, July 20th at Camp Ona in Milton, WV. First time applicants must be entering 9th grade in the Fall of 2018. Cadets must have at least a 2.0 GPA and submit a $75 Academy fee. The application deadline is May 15. A bus load of seniors at JMHS traveled to Union on Thursday, May 3rd to participate in early voting. This year's senior class earned the Jennings Randolph award for registering 100% of the class to vote. These students are setting an example for their peers and our community. Thank you Lieutenant Colonel Womack for setting up this opportunity for our students!
James Monroe High School will hold its annual prom on May 5th, 2018. Thank you to Mr. Pedigo's class at Princeton Senior High School for providing the beautiful flower arrangements.
First Lady Cathy Justice and her Student Art Series announce the Wonderful West Virginia Mothers Essay Contest. All students in 9th and 10th grades, who are attending a West Virginia Public Schools, are invited to submit an essay of five hundred words or less to tell how your mother grandmother, aunt, sister, or any woman has helped and inspired you. The First Lady said, “I have had many strong women mentors in my own life, so I expanded the contest to allow students to write about any woman that has nurtured and guided them throughout life.”
This contest is part of the First Lady’s new Student Artist Series initiative. On special holidays, she will host different art competitions or projects for students to participate in, that will encourage creativity and promote the importance of the arts within public schools in West Virginia. Students may submit an essay via email to [email protected] or mail their entries to The Governor’s Mansion, 1716 Kanawha Boulevard East, Charleston, WV 25305. With their submission, they MUST include a cover page with their name, phone, email, word count, school name, teacher name, and teacher email. The essays must be received by May 4, 2018. Winners will be announced before Mother’s Day. Monetary Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. As part of our prom week festivities, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at JMHS hosted guest speaker, Tony Eubanks for our students. Mr. Eubanks spoke to students about making good choices and positive plans for the future. Mr. Eubanks was a captivating speaker. Thank you FCA for hosting Mr. Eubanks during our prom week.
