On Wednesday, December 17th James Clark, an admissions counselor with West Virginia State University, will be visiting students at JMHS. He will set up during both lunches. James Monroe has been designated a WV success school by the West Virginia Department of Education. This is the highest ranking a WV school can earn. We are very proud of this accomplishment. Students, teachers and staff gathered in the gym on Tuesday, December 9th where they were congratulated by Mrs. Basile and members of the Monroe County Board of Education. Way to go MAVS!!!!
All juniors will take the English and Math COMPASS tests on December 8th and December 9th. Per state policy, students will be scheduled for math and english classes next year based on the scores they earn on these tests. Students in Mrs. Mann's College Transition Math class will test on December 10th. Some colleges may use the scores from this test to determine placement in freshman level college courses.
The Governor's School for the Arts, which will be at West Virginia Wesleyan College on July 5-25, 2015, is now accepting applications. Students who are interested in the area(s) of writing, dancing, singing, acting, digital media art, painting, drawing, or in playing an instrument and who would like, or is able, to spend three weeks on campus for FREE this summer, should stop by the guidance office.
The deadline for application is December 3, 2014. On December 2 during Advisory, the guidance office will be reviewing all local scholarships, requirements and deadlines with seniors. Students should come prepared with any questions they would like answered. The deadline for all local scholarship applications in February 14, unless otherwise noted on Edline.
Salem college is an all girls school in Winston-Salem, NC. On Friday, December 5th prospective students are welcomed to the college to visit. The visit includes informative sessions on Salem's academic programs, internships, study abroad and student life, as well as a tour of the historic campus. Students can register online at www.salem.edu. The registration deadline is December 1st.
This year the mission of the Martin Luther King, Jr. West Virginia Holiday Commission is to celebrate the occasion of the 31st Annual Poster Competition as a means to depict the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The poster must focus on this famous quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “I have decided to stick with love.
