Dear 9th, 10th, and 11th Graders:
The West Virginia Department of Education is excited about its joint venture with the Marshall University Lewis College of Business and Brad D. Smith Schools of Business as we usher in another session of the West Virginia Governor’s School of Entrepreneurship (GSE). Marshall University is eager to welcome students to campus June 19 - July 9 for this free and exciting venture. Students will live in well-chaperoned residence halls on campus and have meals in the University dining hall. They will also have access to many opportunities provided on campus. We will host innovative students who believe they have an idea that may be valuable. Applicants should show a passion for creating a product or idea and possess a learning style that will thrive in a creative and innovative environment. We also need students with computer and programming skills, building skills, an engineering background, business skills, creative minds, and the willingness to take a chance to succeed. We do not expect a student to have all the skills listed; instead, these are the skills we hope to assemble on each team. We want you to create small businesses that will energize the economy of West Virginia, and we hope to foster that growth through fashioning an atmosphere of imagination, innovation, creativity, problem- solving, and FUN. This is an outstanding, free opportunity. Please share this information with your parents. If we can be of assistance, feel free to contact Sherry Keffer at [email protected], or Ray Lowther at [email protected]. You may also reach Mrs. Keffer by phone at 304-640-0988. To learn more or to apply, please visit the Governor’s School website at https://govschools.wv.gov/gse. The deadline is March 25, 2022, and while that may seem far away, it will be here before you know it. Do yourself a favor and plan to attend GSE in 2022. Now, more than ever, young entrepreneurs are needed to help sustain and rebuild West Virginia’s economy. We would love for you to join us in reframing the future of our state and region! Who knows, you may meet a future business partner! Thank you, Sherry Keffer Scheduling for the 2022-2023 school year will take place on Friday, March 25th. Please be sure to bring your signed PEP form with you to scheduling. Without parent signatures, you will be unable to participate. Fayth Laxton, a 2021 graduate of James Monroe High School, returned to her alma mater on March 16, 2022 to speak with students interested in STEM fields about the First2Network organization. Fayth is a First2Network scholar studying forensic science at WVU Tech. She educated students about First2Network opportunities available to first generation and underrepresented groups majoring in STEM fields, including scholarships. Specifically, she highlighted research programs, networking and campus support provided to students. First2Network is an expanding group of people and organizations across West Virginia that seeks to improve STEM persistence among rural, first-generation, and other underrepresented college students so that they – in turn – can contribute to an innovation economy in our state. For more information about the program, visit https://first2network.org/.
James Monroe High School’s French, German, and Journalism classes observed Women's History Month by researching and writing articles about women who have been recognized for their contributions over the years in various countries. French students prepared articles on French-speaking African, Canadian, and European women such as Gisèle Rabesahala from Madagascar, Aoua Keita from Mali, Jaqueline Moudeina from Chad, Marie-José Chombart de Lauwe from France, Kim Phuc from Vietnam, and Fatima Fihri from Morocco. German students prepared articles on German-speaking women from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria such as Gabriele Löschper, Bertha Von Suttner, Sophie Scholl, and Hannah Arendt. Journalism students prepared articles on American women such as Elizabeth Peratrovich, Belle Boyd, Jennifer Garner, Josephine Butler, and Vesta Stoudt. This project helped the students appreciate the significant contributions women, often unsung, have made around the world and through the centuries.
